Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath is an uncomfortable feeling of not getting enough air. Many causes are harmless and easily corrected; however, shortness of breath can be a symptom of a serious medical condition.

Causes

Shortness of breath has many different causes. It may occur with exercise, especially if you are not used to exercising. Other causes may include:

  • Cigarette smoking

  • Lung cancer

  • Emphysema

  • Asthma

  • Pneumonia

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Allergies

  • Allergic shock

  • Obesity

  • Heart attack

In severe cases, hospitalization may be required. Medications to treat the cause of shortness of breath may be used. If your blood oxygen level is low, supplemental oxygen may be given.

Self-Care

If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that causes shortness of breath, you may be able to get relief by following the treatment plan given to you by your doctor. If you have an inhaler, use it as directed. It may also help to:

  • Elevate your head when resting or sleeping

  • Avoid activities that aggravate symptoms

  • Avoid all possible allergens or irritants
